THE Crookwell Dogs suffered a hard 22-10 loss on the weekend when they travelled to Bungendore to play the second placed Mudchooks.
The Dogs, coming off the end of two weekends without rugby, still looked considerably stronger on the field despite their loss and were still in the game until the last 10 minutes when the score blew out and the Chooks ran away with the victory.
Crookwell handled the pressure of an away game well and were not going to sit back and watch the Chooks get all the scraps.
The Mudchooks were first on the board with a penalty kick going through the uprights to lead 3-nil.
But the Dogs showed persistence producing good phase play and were rewarded for their efforts equalising the score with a penalty kick by Andrew Nolan.
The score sat at 3-all before the Chooks strengthened their lead with a converted try.
Crookwell were within seven points at the half-time whistle and were still in with a fighting chance with the half time score Crookwell 3 to Bungendore 10.
The Doggies fought hard causing some upsets for the home crowd who provided more sledging then a cricket match.
Another unconverted try to Bungendore extended their lead to 15-3 before Crookwell came back with prop Gearin Price running over the Bungendore line out wide.
Andrew Nolan faced a difficult kick into the wind but was successful with his conversion taking the Dogs to a more confident score line, just five points behind Bungendore at 15-10.
Just when Crookwell felt close, playing some good running rugby, Bungendore extended their lead with yet another converted try taking the score to 22-10
Dog's coach Greg Anderson said, "the scoreboard didn't really reflect the game, especially the second half."
Overall, Crookwell played some good attacking rugby and looked very threatening at times.
Points: 3- Anthony Frost (Flanker), 2 - Fed Bensley (Fullback), 1 - Sam Hall (Outside Centre), Players Player - Fred Bensley, Chicks Pick - Fred Bensley.
This weekend the Dogs face the new side in the competition, Harden.
Crookwell previously smacked Harden in the first round, flattening them by 48 points to 7.
The Dogs are currently sitting fifth on the competition ladder and need a win if they want to advance to the semis.
Crookwell look to have a near full strength team taking the field for their home game and are welcoming back some key players - Jack Picker, Hugh Klem, Rob Christie and Dave Culley.
